Summary of Event:
Organised by the Agency for the Development of Businesses in Africa with the support of the European Commission, the Region Rhone-Alps and the Grand Lyon, this 9th edition will bring together experts and representatives from international funding bodies, political and economic decision makers, and businesses, around the issues of Water and Energy, two sectors considered to be priorities in Africa and for the United Nations' Millennium Development Goals (MDG). The aim of the EURAFRIC FORUM partnerships will be to promote partnerships between the EU and Africa in the sectors of Water and Energy, to improve the competitiveness of African businesses, and to reduce poverty in Africa. The Forum is directed to European and African SME/SMI specialized in equipment manufacturing and industrial subcontracting, to large public and private companies, political decision makers, financial institutions and partners, professional associations, and to organisms which promote investment. Financing for water and energy, transfers of technology and SME/SMI partnerships will be the major themes of this 4-day gathering between European and African businesses. The lunchtime debate will be dedicated to 'EU - African Cooperation as part of the Economic Partnership Agreements (EPAs)'. For this 9th edition, ADEA organizes, in partnership with HYDRO 2009, a Ministerial Meeting which will take place on October 28th, on the topic « Big Dams in Africa». At this occasion, a review of the FAO Conference (Sirte 2008) « Water for Agriculture and Energy in Africa » will take place. Objective Following the joint Africa-EU strategy (2007)[1] the Environment Directorate of DG Research plans to launch a cross thematic ‘Africa call’ (deadline approximately beginning of 2010). The aim of the two-day event is to initiate competitive proposals for the upcoming calls of the EU Framework Programme in the field of water management, sanitation and sludge treatment and to help lift the barriers for cooperation between Europe and Africa and between research organisations and companies. In November 2008, the European Commission held a dialogue with African researchers to help identify environmental research topics of a strategic nature and of a regional dimension which would attract the mutual interest of the European Union and Africa for science and technology collaboration. This dialogue was hosted under the auspices of the INTERLINK Project which has the overall objective to promote and facilitate international cooperation in the Environment theme of FP7. The purpose of this Workshop is to provide a platform for African researchers to engage in and deliberate on these topics with EU partners and thereby prepare themselves to respond to these forthcoming Environment calls. The Workshop will focus on the following topics: - early warning systems to predict climate change related meteorological hazards in Europe and in Africa - Integrated management of natural resources ( including biodiversity, water, soil, forest, landscapes and ecosystems) in Africa - Water harvesting technologies in Africa. The final conference of the EU-funded AquaTerra project will take place from 25 to 27 March 2009 in Tubingen, Germany. The objective of the conference is to discuss the state of knowledge gained during the five-year duration of the project, which studied the river, sediment, soil and groundwater system as a whole. The conference will also propose directions and incentives for future research. Talks and discussions will revolve around four principal subjects, namely: processes, monitoring, modeling, future scenarios. The conference is open to all researchers. AquaTerra is an Integrated Project of the 6th Framework Programme.

As part of the INT-ER-LINK project, the European Commission (EC) along with the INT-ER-LINK partners, are organizing an "Africa - EC Dailogue" workshop in Brussels, November 7th 2008. The Workshop’s main objective is to help include African research priorities into the next FP7 Framework Programme (FP7) Environment Work Programme (call opening 2009). 25 African experts are invited to the workshop, representing all Sub-Saharan Africa. The Workshop will address the following environmental research areas: Climate change, pollution and risks; Sustainable Management of Resources; Environmental Technologies; Earth Observation and Assessment tools. ESASTAP (European-South African science and technology advancement programme) will be organizing a Workshop, ‘Developing Capacity Building Activities in the Domain of Earth Observations in the New EU Countries and in the Developing Countries’ , FP7 Programme, Earth Observations. The Workshop will be held between 23-24 October 2008 at the Ndlovu Lodge, Pretoria, South Africa. The 4th International Geosphere - Biosphere Programme (IGBP) Congress was held in
Cape Town, South Africa, between 5 - 9 May 2008. The aim of this meeting was to develop ways for IGBP to apply Earth System science and improve IGBP relevance to civil society, the private Sector and the policy community and to address the challenges of Global Environmental Change and development in Africa (climate change as a stress factor to African development, water systems, etc). During the Congress the INTERLINK project was represented by the National Research Foundation, who also co-sponsored the congress. An INTERLINK exhibition was displayed throughout the congress - including posters and banners.
